YouTube Announces Tougher Restrictions on Gambling-Related Content

YouTube is set to impose stricter guidelines on gambling-related content, with new measures coming into effect on March 19. The platform will no longer permit creators to link to or reference unapproved gambling websites, a move aimed at reducing exposure to unregulated betting platforms. This applies to verbal endorsements, logos, direct links, and promotional imagery within videos.

In addition to limiting access to these sites, YouTube will also begin enforcing age restrictions on gambling-related content. Under the new rules, users under 18 or those not signed in will be unable to view videos that promote online betting services. The platform is also expanding its policy to remove content that guarantees winnings, regardless of whether the site being promoted is legally approved.

Gambling Content Under Increased Scrutiny

The decision follows an increase in gambling-related content on YouTube, particularly in the wake of the 2018 legalization of sports betting in the U.S. With millions of viewers engaging with online betting videos, concerns have been raised about the potential risks associated with gambling promotions, particularly among younger audiences.

YouTube has already prohibited misleading claims about gambling, but the latest changes go a step further in regulating how betting-related content is presented. Videos that promote unrealistic betting strategies or claim to guarantee profits will now be subject to removal.

This policy shift is part of YouTube's wider approach to content moderation.
