Apple’s iOS App Store and Google Play had purged “hundreds of fake apps” that researchers from Trend Micro discovered were gambling apps masquerading as apps dealing with far less controversial subjects, such as weather, travel or wine.

Many of these apps were focused on Asian markets where gambling in almost any form is strictly prohibited.

Funny you mention that.
I busted (and reported to Google) an app not that long ago, which was nothing more than an affiliate portal, masquerading, as something useful. Haven't checked if it was deleted, but given your post, it's likely it got ejected.

I acxtually had one of these apps for a few short months a few years ago, it was blocked pretty quick though there are still tons there

I'm all for thinking outside the box when it comes to marketing one's site. But, purposely dressing an app-up to appear as something different, is no different to a casino using bait-and-switch tactics. Which isn't IMO Kosher.
