The Australian House of Representatives has passed "The Interactive Gambling Amendment (Credit and Other Measures) Bill 2023," prohibiting credit card and related products for online gambling. Alongside penalties for non-compliance, this measure also grants the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) new enforcement powers, set to align online gambling regulations with land-based operations. The bill, supported by both major parties, now heads to the Australian Senate after rejecting amendments, sparking wider industry adjustments and a six-month transition period.

In November 2021, recommendations to this effect were made by the parliamentary joint committee on corporations and financial services. Before that, in December 2019, the Australian Banking Association (ABA) held a consultation on the use of credit cards in gambling. Some banks decided to act before the government and put in place their own prohibition on using credit cards to gamble.

WestPac (another AU Bank) also acted on this ban in circa 2021.

They also went so far as to STOP customers transacting with off-shore igaming entities. I'm pretty sure that also included payment of winnings and or affiliate payments too.

Great move by the Australian House of Representatives! Prohibiting credit cards for online gambling promotes responsible gaming. Excited to see how this aligns regulations and encourages a safer and more controlled online gambling environment. Kudos to the progress!
