Posting this mainly for any newbie webmasters:

If you get an e-mail from some company you've never dealt with asking you to pay to renew your domain - it's a SCAM!

I've had a few of these, the latest one today was from DOMAIN REGISTRATION SEO SERVICE Corp.
It had all the correct info, my name, address & web address and was asking me to pay $54 for a year!

I've had things like this come through the post too.
If you get one it is 100% a SCAM.
Domain renewal should ONLY be done by the company you used to register with (usually your hosting company).

I these in the post fairly regularly and they end up straight in the bin...

I wonder how many people get caught out the the 'official' looking letter - especially the non tech savvy with sites for clubs, societies or B&M businesses.

Given a lot of people are now registering their own domains, as apposed to a few years back when that task was usually performed by their web developer or hosting provider, I dare say a lot are being scammed.

While I've always preferred transparency, in the last couple of years, I've changed to using a proxy service. I got jack of all the BS turning up at my post office box and my dedicated domains email address. Albeit I only work with a couple of registrar's so easy to pick legit contacts ;)

I get these types of emails all the time and they're extremely annoying. There is one company that even tries to send letters via snail mail with like $80 renewal fees... Extremely funny, but a waste on their end!

I have come across the scam which usually orginates from china with domains similar to mine .net, eu etc, claiming somebody has purchased it to use as a cyber squatting site, when I check the domains they list they are usually still available, just a trick so you pay craz inflated proces for domains you will never use

Email these people back (usually Chinese people) and say you've contacted their local police department and to expect a dawn raid any time soon. I've found this tactic usually puts the wind up them and they don't contact me again!
