Hi all,

I want to speed up a site but am not willing to fork out for a VPS. So what CDN's are good?

Honestly, this is the first I have heard of CDN :) Now my interest is peaked. Hopefully someone has some good information.

Cant wait to hear it myself. Ive live chatted with companies, googled and Wikipedia'd it , id just like some info from someone who uses one. From what i can gather it's basically a site speed up, i'd just like to know if its worth it?

CDN will help, depends on the cost vs benefit though. Also depends how constrained your server is at the moment. Serving other elements of a webpage from a different server should always help.

The main thing that will help performance is reducing your image sizes and reducing the number of elements in each page, plus a whole host of other performance measures. I would check what you've got at the moment and try refine that before moving to a CDN.

CloudFlare.com offers free CDN service - though you get what you pay for!

Essentially what a CDN does, is serve your (cached) site from the nearest point to where the request is coming from. So if you site is hosted in the USA and a player, with an EU IP rquests your page, it will be served from an EU node/cloud server. CloudFlare also has the benefit of protecting your site from Ddos attacks, hackers, spammers and what not. Instead of your site sitting out in the open, vaunrable to attack, it sits behind the Cloud Flare global distribution network. So anything dodgy hitsting the CFGDN is filtered, before it's allowed to acces your site.

To use CF you do need to change your domains A Records and point your dns's to those given to you by CloudFlare. Though they do have an automated process, which, returns all the info you need to change domains records and dns entires.

Thing is though, while a CDN has good benefits, it shouldn't be considered as a poor-man's VPS. Cheap Shared-hosting is fine for static html sites but I sure wouldn't be running a WP site on it.
If you don't know why that is, I suggest you use Google and find out why... I'm not going to do all your home-work for ya :D

There is nothing wrong with wordpress on a shared hosting package.
to say that wordpress is no good on shared hosting is a bit strange.
Wordpress got tons of plugins to speedup a site.
mimify,smush it and so on.
And about that cloudfare you should give google pagespeed a try,its free and much beter

Cloud Flare is a CDN and Google page speed, well... that just tests your web site page speed and suggests improvements. Two completely different services.

I have to agree with this statement, some of my best preforming WP sites are on a simple shared hosting package. Back when I was getting hit by a lot of spiders/spammers/blackhatters or whatever you want to call it (way to many visits) I set a few of my sites on a CDN... Had it host just the images, js and css files.. While it loaded much faster, it seemed to have a negative affect on my rankings.

Now I am back to simple shared hosting sites, with the right plugin setup, and I am happy!

Well, Cloudflares free cdn has sped up my site, my wordpress site on cheap shared hosting. Quick simple setup and AT LEAST 1 second faster, only time will tell. This is just day 1 results.

Can't find a downside. Even after talking to my hosting company they said it improves speed, security and uses less resources there end. Win win.

I use Cloudflare.. and its great.. it does more than just deliver content, Security, minify scripts, there is also a rocket launcher which I find to be a little buggy for my site, I also use the page-speed-mod and no cache plugin, but I will say one thing you can find VPS servers for $16 per month.. If you are not willing to invest a few dollars more into your site you shouldn't really expect to make any extra money either, if you aim on making more than $50 per month from your site then a VPS should be standard, it's not just about the speed but also up time and configuration,

Ditch Cloudflare folks. They refuse to close the account of the verifiedcasinos hackers even though I pointed out that their illegal hacking was clearly in breach of the Cloudflare T&Cs. They are actively working with criminals that are competing against you and are regarded as a favourite service of hackers and spammers worldwide.

They are also probably not protecting your site as well as you think they are. Look at this comparative security test result for example where their results were abysmal.

There are plenty of alternatives, just do a bit of googling.

CDN it will surely improve your Google rankings and the experience of your users. What is happening is the following :

Images will be served to your clients NOT from your website direct but from the CDN network , therefore your pages will load faster
Your website will be cashed on multiple Geo - locations , that will make your website to load superfast no matter where the visitor is Geo-located
CSS , Java script and other CSS script are compressed on the CDN network and that it will also make your website running faster

Google is giving extra score to websites that are using CDN because , Google's today no.1 goal is to make the internet a faster world plus in this way you show to them that you take your bussiness really serious.

The only dilemma is that you need to ask yourself , if your make enough money from your website that will justify this not cheap improvement.

I would highly recommend MaxCDN ! They are just the best!

Regards,

Ari
