The marketing channels you always hear about involve advertising or giving away prizes on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Adwords is the other big player in the market. Excluding these which have been well discussed on this forum what are alternative ideas?

Writing articles for your specific industry that other websites will publish with a link to your website tends to get a lot of traffic but it can be difficult to find such websites if anybody could recommend some that would be great.

For a sports/gambling affiliate:

1. What are the most creative marketing methods you have seen to advertise an affiliate website?
2. What do you actually think first time visitors to your affiliate website want to see apart from a banner with $200 sign up here?

I am in the sports betting category and two of the best I have seen so far that take different approaches are flashscore.com and olbg.com which had an annual turnover of over £3.3m in their last financial year.

"What are the most creative marketing methods you have seen to advertise an affiliate website?"

Being creative! Don't be the next webmaster who publish stupid progressions like Martingale, Alambert or Labouchere with winning promises, everyone already read 100 times before.

"What do you actually think first time visitors to your affiliate website want to see apart from a banner with $200 sign up here?"

If you don't tell the audience with a report or article, why they should made a higher first deposit than 100 (no matter which currency), most will ignore. In this case a banner is not enough.

I'm not talking about your run of the mill nonsense affiliate website that just has 20 banners on their home page with little content and is hoping someone clicks on one.

Any genuine marketing ideas for proper affiliate websites?

I think you've partially answered your own question. The way I see it you have two decent options:

1. Follow what other successful sites are doing.

2. Be creative! Become a user and see how you feel. Ask yourself what would attract you, your friends, and your family to click through to your site.

The worst thing you can do, and what most actually do, is repeat same old material, same articles, etc that doesn't even convert in the first place! If you're gonna copy others, copy the best ;)

I was thinking about running some competitions, apparently they are a good way to attract backlinks. I'm still researching how to do it, and what sort of prizes I should give away. Not sure if it will work or not, but it sounds like a pretty cool idea worth trying :)

Anybody want to share an idea?

I'm sure other affiliates have ways of getting traffic, other than relying just on SE's. I certainly do!
Thing is though, I wont hand this information out and I'm sure others wont either.

What I will say... Think outside the square. Run A/B tests and try anything if you think it will work. The point is though, you need to put in the hours like everyone else does. In cases like this, with questions like these, no one is going to do that hard work for you ;)

I think you are running into... yes, everyone wants to be helpful.. but, no, they don't want to give away all their secrets :) I would love to give you some, but my ideas are all about creating content that you think the user would want to see and forget about the search engines. That's all I have for you :)

That's a difficult one to answer, because:

a) first you must determine who is successful

and

b) then you need much more work to understand why they do well and how you can replicate their success

Even if I wanted to, I couldn't type out an answer that would encompass all of that.

AGD hit it on the head with this.
Like other members here, I'm always willing to help other affiliates with coding, WordPress etc...etc BUT I draw the line at giving away information about my traffic sources. :D
