Hey everyone,

Sorry I haven't been around much. My PC got hacked very well and I have been trying for about a week to recover. I have lost all emails and everything else on that machine (which was just about everything).

I'm still trying to recover it. I have gotten it up and running for brief periods prior to crashing.

Anyway - it's taking all of my time :(

Sorry hear about that GD.

What are you using for protection, as in antivirus, firewall (software) and anti-malware?
What type of internet connection are you using?

I use a software (firewall - Comodo & their antivirus Premium ) and a hardcoded firewall which came with my Cisco router. I also use Super Anti Spyware (for malware etc etc).

Also have a VPN I sometimes USE to surf the net, depending the neighbourhoods I'm in. The service I use have a nice GUI which had additional features. Cost me about $59US a year, with access to multiple proxies around the world and over 60K in actually IP's.

That sucks!

My old Laptop got fried in January - not by the annoying little browser virus which infected it, but by the stupid AdwCleaner software which was supposed to get rid of it... Well it got rid of it OK - but it also got rid of my entire operating system!
Cost me a lot of money, time & grief to get it fixed.
I back up all my important stuff regularly, so that wasn't too bad, but it is now hard to access my old e-mails and I couldn't do any website updates for a week.
Bought a new W8 laptop immediately, and so far (touch wood) no problems with unwanted ware on this one.

Hope you get back up and running ASAP Andy.

I was using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes combined. I am only firewalled so much as Windows is and my ISP has naturally built into the router (not much). I do use VPN to surf at times and pay $9.99/month for that. I typically only use it for casinos, though, so that I appear as if I am from the UK. Mostly for screenshots.

NOW - I just purchased BitDefender and may or may not put Malwarebytes back on. My OS is back up, but I'm leary of it staying :) Since I use Virtual Machines (I have an ESXi server) exclusively, I scanned the crap out of it at a base level and removed all viruses and crap that way. It was still having problems, so I suspected HDD issues. So - I moved it at a server level from one datastore to another. Seems to be running, but it has only been about 10 minutes. Hopefully it sticks - I'm running another full scan on the running machine now - but do not expect to find anything.

Thanks bud. Good luck with the new one. I hope you eventually recover. I lost all my emails once awhile back and it took me a lot of time to recover all the contacts. I had a lot of people saying ' Hey, I sent you this about 5 times, why are you not responding!!!' :) It really sucked.

It's been almost 2 hours with no crashes!!!! I think I'm in the clear. And I really like BitDefender as a security measure. I have tried a lot of them: AVG, Symantec, ESET, Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes... I guess I'm an AV whore huh. Well, I think I'm sticking with BitDefender. maybe it's just the kick-ass logo ;)

I go wacked a few years ago. It was actually malwarebytes that found the virus. The others I tried could not. Completely trashed an almost new desktop.

well, I had a good run :( System back down. Back to the drawing board. I'm thinking there are some bad sectors. Was running BitDefender and it crashed. Anyone know of a good solution if that is the problem - worth a shot trying

Would be interested to hear if they find anything - I suspect not.

Despite the hi-tech image - most hacks and hackers are low tech - using purchased programs and with minimal skills and intelligence. The most common are keylogging and password breeches.

If your PC was hacked earlier and you had used it to access website control panels etc, then it's likely that is how the hacker got access to it. Change all passwords - and make each signon/password unique.

You will probably struggle to remember them and will have to write them in a physical notebook for maximum offline security. If you use any password remotely / offsite / over a public or hotel network then it's time to change that password when you get home.

Very old school but it will give you much better password safety redundancy and it's pretty secure from remote hacking.

My PC and AGD are 2 separate things :) The AGD Server was scanned and several exploits were put on the server. All have been removed. My PC I scanned and removed a bunch of stuff... I changed all passwords, though.
