I saw an article this morning on sigma about regulations in Germany and that might ban the digital ads, we have a website mainly in German market, what do you guys suggest?

focus on another market and redirect all the backlinks to the new market or continue to promote in Germany?

I'm no expert in the German market but nothing seems to be for sure yet. As an affiliate you must always be prepared for change. Look at the Swedish market. It used to be one of the most lucrative, but after regulations it has become one of the worst. So yeah, you definitely need to be prepared for the würst.

The new gambling contract has several objectives:

First of all, the countries want to curb the booming gray and black market in online gambling, which is shaped by foreign companies beyond the reach of german authorities.

Secondly, player protection and addiction prevention are to be intensified: Registration via a player file is to ensure that no more than 1,000 euros can be gambled per month in online casinos and with sports betting - conspicuous players would be detected and possibly blocked by an early warning system. Parallel games with several providers at the same time should no longer be possible. This inevitably presupposes that all bets and bets are documented precisely and without gaps.

The regulation also ensures that tax revenues in the millions will be remain in the country - so far, Malta, Gibraltar, Cyprus and some Caribbean islands in particular have benefited from gambling by german players.

Meanwhile, the multi-billion dollar sports betting industry, which has so far hardly been subject to advertising restrictions and is courting customers with celebrities such as Oliver Kahn, is on alert. Because the 1,000 euro limit would also apply to this segment. Especially for the particularly popular live bets, there should be restrictions in the future, for example to prevent manipulation. In this case, sports clubs fear sponsorship revenues: providers such as Bwin or Tipico are advertising partners of several Bundesliga clubs, including FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

During the day there should be a gambling ban on TV, radio and on the Internet - only spots would be allowed during the day and night. A time window between 9 pm and 6 am is currently being discussed.

I would continue but that's only my opinion. My biggest concern is the limitation for €1.000!

Honestly, with those kind of ridiculously stringet rules, what's even the point of allowing online gambling. They might as well ban it altogether. I can bet my ass that the black market will grow even stronger because of this.

Untill 31.June 2021 is still a long time. I am not sure if the new law will come so as they plan it now. It would be not the first try with no result at the end. The chance is very high that all continues so as it is now.

Quite a distant date, it can change a lot but probably some people will scare away from the German market. Maybe it will be just like with Sweden.

And how is the French-speaking market? I have the opportunity to translate my site with bitcoin bookmakers "by the way" into French, but as you know France has its regulation, however, this language has a greater range. Do you think it's worth it if it is done by the way, not at a high cost?

Surprised that your biggest concern is the €1,000 betting limit, i have been reading through the document i see two major issues:

1. No advertising online from 9pm to 6am - so as an affiliate you will have take your site offline during these hours, how can this work?

2. No more rev share CPA and flat fee only - I am unsure if this includes existing players but if a player can only deposit up to 1k a month the player value is now significantly lower meaning affiliates will make less money and so will operators as player values will fall through the floor.

Would love to hear other people thoughts.

Thanks

From where you have this information? This is the first I hear and it will be for sure not so at the end.

to 1. This is probably only for sports betting discussed but i have no idea how exactly this should work.

to 2. I agree but we must wait till the prime ministers should principle approve the new state treaty at the beginning of march. The draft then still has to be ratified by the individual state parliaments. The new state treaty is due to enter into force on July 1, 2021 - then the previous one will expire.

You can read on several news or gaming portals in germany.

We will see what the new contract all includes. But i'm sure that the 1K limitation and the central supervisory authority be determined to protect gambling addiction.

Whether a time frame for advertising gambling on TV, radio or the Internet will come i don't know. We must really wait for the details on this contract. Maybe it will be only valid for sports betting.

It seems like the 1k deposit limit is going to be across all operators for the month, i am assuming the state will create some kind of log in that shows deposit amounts, operators can apply to have VIP limits increased but this will be on a player by player case. Fingers crossed they will drop the ban of advertising online otherwise this will kill the market not even sure how that can be done.

As a DE market specialist at my company, i can tell you this :

1. You still have almost a year and a half to grab as many players (Casino/Sports Betting) as possible, the DE market starting to pay more money now as they see what's going on and they want as many players as possible before the regulation hits.

2. Start working on other countries like Africa (South Africa for example is a Huge market), UK, AU (regulations will hit in a year or so but it's exploding now!) Russia, and more.

3. Don't stop your DE business as we saw the affect regulation had on other countries before... a bit shock at first but the brands will manage... just had meetings with some of the bigger brands and they are not worried, Yes the earning to both the publishers and the brands will be lower at first. But it will recover.

Hope i helped a little :)

Wow, a lot of useful info here, thanks guys. To be honest I wasn't very familiar with the situation regarding German regulation, but I did notice many brands have added DE as restricted geo...I agree, EU will be almost entirely regulated, which means there will be a very low phase. Spreading our focus in Asia and Africa is needed

Hey Lucy,
Do take in mind they say that German industry will go into regulation for years now ! as well as the AU market, i would hold my horses on that one as i know from the Brand managers i'm working with things won't change that quick, i face some Brands will push more budgets towards DE market as a result :)

Best.
