Promoting casinos that are also affiliates

Hi. Recently I was testing a link on a program I just signed up with, and in the process noticed that the page a user sees when they are from a non-supported country has links to other casinos.

So, how do we as affiliates feel about that?

For me, I don't like it. I would prefer that the user ended up on a dead page than one with links to other casinos.

I can't imagine any serious company doing this, but it depends on the site or traffic in my opinion. If I target Finland for example, i don't care what they show to visitors from Ecuador or something :)

This is a huge conflict of interests for affiliate programs that also want to be affiliates at the same time. You are just feeding the Lion that's about to eat you by working with programs like these.
It's a bit like a manufacturer of a product who appoints dealers & then out the back door they are selling / competing directly against their very own dealers.

You really want to keep your cards close to your chest when discussing any strategies with affiliate managers of these programs, you are probably only getting milked for information that they can use themselves on their own portals against you.

To spend time, money and effort to send the casino a player, only to have that casino redirect that player to another casino with absolutely no benefit to the affiliate who originally referred that player is pure and simple theft.

Not just the programs we're talking about in this thread, but whatever program. A lot of casinos are run by (former-) affiliates. Many of them are having still a network to drive traffic to their own casino. And also a lot of affiliate managers working for programs, are having their own websites, trying their own websites or will try with their own website.

Guts for example. Always fishing, but they're not just a program, also a competitor.

Thanks for the replies. No one seems to be for it so far. It would be interesting to hear an opposing view.

In regard to operators that also have their own affiliate type websites, that is a definite no for me, too.

In relation to the operator referenced in my op, in the email exchange the aff. manager didn't see this as a problem and mentioned that they work with some of the biggest affiliates, who don't have a problem. So that's why I asked on here.

To be fair, if it was a brand that I really wanted to promote, I would probably geo-target to get around this.

This exact thing happened to me at FA/FL.

Back in 2007 when I commenced targeting AU/NZ, they built me a bespoke free play flash casino, which allowed players to signup and play. Those player were then marketed to. I was always treated more so as a strategic partner than an affiliate per se. By 2010 the Brand was doing very well, and as one of their Senior Managers was in AU, we had a meeting. Everything went well that day until we were 5 min from dropping him at the airport.

I'll never forget those words he said, "So why do we need you???!!!"

The wife said later if she'd had been driving, she'd have stopped the car and kicked the prick out. Of course I couldn't do that, but I felt like it.

My advice whether they run an oposing aff portal or not, GIVE then NOTHING, no information about your traffic, not a damn thing. Share nothing with them. Cause 9 times out of 10, the'll have no qualms in using that information to shaft you if they can make a buck out of it themselves - they will shaft you ;)
