What magic is inkedin.com up to?

Their website is relatively new and dominates a lot of competitive keywords, and that's not due to their awesomeness, but rather due to some SEO wizardry.

• They have thousands of articles without inbound links;
• They have a sub-domain called L.inkedin.com.

What are your thoughts?

It is because:

1. they have a domain that has a huge amount of accidental backlinks of people forgetting the starting L so LinkedIn becomes InkedIn (e..g, links from PwC, iHeart, BuzzSprout)
2. they buy a lot of high-DR links
   1. most are probably useless
   2. a few do help them climb SERPs

That's really it, to be honest.
