That's a really nice gesture, but I was under the impression that the +1's only affected results for your gmail contacts? I thought it didn't affect regular SERPs.

Correct me if I'm wrong!

Because of this, +1’s from friends and contacts can be a useful signal to Google when determining the relevance of your page to a user’s query. This is just one of many signals Google may use to determine a page’s relevance and ranking, and we’re constantly tweaking and improving our algorithm to improve overall search quality. For +1's, as with any new ranking signal, we'll be starting carefully and learning how those signals affect search quality.

I'm not saying you are going to rank with this alone. But, why miss out on the opportunity of possibly improving your site's chances of ranking? Especially if the opportunity is free and doesn't take hardly any time.

I still read it as only affect results of contacts:
