Illegal online gambling in South Korea has surged, with cases tripling from 13,064 in 2019 to over 39,000 in 2023, according to the National Gambling Control Commission (NGCC). Online gambling now represents more than 80% of illegal bets. The rise is partly attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the closure of legal gambling venues. This trend is particularly concerning for young people, with a 4.6-fold increase in minors seeking treatment for gambling disorders since 2017. Despite budget cuts and legal efforts, illegal platforms continue to thrive, overshadowing legal gambling revenues significantly.
