Oh the quote was because he mentioned hostgator in post #3 on this thread.. Its a huge host, thats why I was thinking along the lines of 'this is strange'.. as I am sure they would accept .au and most others as well..

Yeah HG is not the best, I started with them but have since moved away..

Are you using the LiteSpeed Webserver Enterprize add-on on your Knownhost VPS?

From memory recall, if I added lightspeed, I couldn't use cPanel/WHM.

Both WP sites use Fastest WP Cache + the premium package. Need both to work. In addition, have lots of htaccess tweaks etc, and reduced some DB calls in the theme coding. As well as optimised images etc.

Dave are you moving your sites out of OZ hosting getting ready for the pokies doomsday scenario ?

I was looking at having a play with Digital Ocean hosting but not got around to it yet, never had much success with USA shared hosting, but i will check out the Knownhost VPS for some new projects that are on the things to do list :)

99% of AU hosting (shared, managed VPS/dedi) is the pits. Over priced, and well below par compared to US. After yet another support screw up (approx 18 months ago), I'd had a gut full. That's when I moved everything over KnownHost. There's always a few teething issues, but they sorted those quickly. From then onwards, I've been very happy.

SiteGround is great for shared hosting, but truly horrid for VPS.

Had major drama's with them setting up custom server names. In the end, they wouldn't do it unless I either puchased another domain thru them, or transfered and exsiting over. The next day I cancelled, and moved to KnownHost.

All my .au domains, are on the VPS.

With regard to your question... The BIG issue with .au domains is, if you want to sell a site, your limited to who can buy it. So back in early 2015, I registered .com's and other TLD's for my Brands. Now that this AU storm is brewing, I'm in the process of making change overs. Whether the AU bills get passed or not, it's time I moved away from .au domains.

Besides, as far as SEO goes, .au domain; or if it's hosted in AU, is not a deal breaker like it was a few years back.

I've never used KnownHost, but am very strongly considering WP-Engine, a managed WordPress host, who seem to have their act together. They're not cheap, but they take care of a lot of the security and back-up stuff and have a reputation for delivery blazing fast WP sites. Currently, my main sites are with EvoHosting and Hostgator (with CloudFlare CDN running very nicely, thank you). With any WP site, you do have to do with AussieDave suggests and properly optimize your install for speed. WP Fastest Cache is the one I use too and I also use a database optimization plugin.
